I took the kids to see Admiral Lord Nelson's ship Victory on the coldest day in recorded history. Good thing they had their I-can't-believe-these-only-cost-$25 coats on. Honestly, the kids could have participated in the re-enactments of the Scott polar expeditions that have been going on in these bad boys. They're the standard two-layer coat--fleece inner jacket zipped into a wind-proof shell with a silly fake fur-lined snap-on hood. Coupled with two pairs of terrific gloves with secret Velcro pocket that converts them to mittens and the kids have been set. Throughout the standard windy, rainy spring weather of Northern Europe, they've been warm and toasty.
Many museums here have had sticker pages to entertain the kids. This one didn't, but the maps of the ship were entertaining enough. They asked me for a photo with the map. Feel free to enjoy the cannon if the map isn't lighting your fire.
Even the captain slept in a hammock. The Mercedes of hammocks, mind you, but a hammock nonetheless.
Boom! Seeing these up close is pretty inspiring.
This is the one photo I got of the girls where they were NOT doing an interpretive modern dance on deck. The docents were amused.
Surprisingly elegant living quarters for the captain. But everything could be converted for battle. The floor was a tarp that could be rolled up at a moment's notice.
Olivia wanted a photo of the small boats on deck.
You can't imagine how camped it was in there. I felt the breath catch in my throat a few times and there were only about 10 other people on the ship with us.
Olivia wanted to see the Royal Naval Museum. I thought it'd be a giant snore, but they loved it!
They were told to try out the beds, but they refused to put their shoes on the bunk. Even after the docent told them it was okay, they wouldn't do it. I'm a proud mama that my kids wouldn't make a mess, even when they were told they could.
They were super shy about ringing the bell. Particularly when the docent moved the chair over to make it easier. Funny girls.
