Culinary Discoveries

Two summers ago, when we arrived in Paris after the horrible overnight flight, the kids refused to eat chocolate croissants.  They hadn't seen them before, so assumed they were inedible.  I gave up and they went hungry that morning.  After two days, they discovered croissants and chocolate croissants.  This time, I took the kids to a local, authentic French restaurant to remind them that they like baguette and croissants!

In England, Helena has discovered toast.  I have never seen anybody butter and jam up every square millimeter of the top of a piece of toast quite like that kid.  She now loves raspberry jam.  Who knew?

Helena's other new favorite is bangers and mash.  Well, just the bangers.  This isn't as much of a surprise since she loves sausage at home and ate a ton of sausage in France (Note to self: find out if we can we get chipolatas in the U.S.).  It tickles me that she doesn't like mashed potatoes.  I used to try to make her eat them, but since they're pretty much nutritionally void, I don't mind her disliking them.

Full confession time: I tried mushy peas for the first time the other day.  Icky.  I'm not a peas fan under normal conditions.  Mashing them up did nothing to increase their charm.
