Since we got the YAT (York Archaeological Trust) Pass to save money, I went to Barley Hall. It was one of two "minor" sites that the pass covered. As with the earlier-blogged-about Mickelgate Bar, we were enchanted with Barley Hall.
While doing restoration work in the 1980's, they uncovered this great home complex from the 1600's. Here's Olivia demonstrating how the lesser members of the household would eat from wooden plates. The lord, lady, family members and honored guests would use pewter.
A hearth in the middle of the room provided warmth. And burned tushies, I suspect.
Barley Hall had a great exhibit on period costumes from recent movies. Keira Knightley and Heather Ledger wore these.
After seeing the costumes, they had some hats that the kids enjoyed trying.
Terrific day, great site, wonderful surprise.
