York's Assembly Rooms are now an Italian restaurant. I explained that they used to be used for public business and meetings during the day (mostly by men while the women stayed home) and at night for social occasions, receptions and balls. We had seen period ball gowns in Bath and I was trying to make the connection.
That night, while skyping with her dad, Helena explained that we had been "to the place where men go during the day and women go at night." He was completely confused. Rightfully so!
One nice touch--bringing out a crudites plate before the meal. The kids loved the garlic bread, but fought the veges. I was glad they made the effort, though. Other than that, the food was overpriced and overcooked. Don't charge me $17 for over-spiced chicken in a mid-range pesto sauce served by someone in ripped jeans and a T-shirt. Just sayin'.
