This is a Medieval street in the heart of downtown York. Each successive level built above the ground was widened, so eventually the rooftops of opposing buildings nearly met. On a sunny day, the Shambles, a street of merchants and inns, would have been shaded.
Behind the shop fronts, on the left, is a daily market. Stalls of fruit and vegetable vendors vie with sellers of books, cheap clothing, knock-off purses, crappy leatherwear and other touristy things. One authentic store sold preserves, pickle and cheese. A small, but varied and wonderful looking butcher stall competed with the AC/DC T-shirt guy.
My girls, as always, chose to "pose" for the photo. I usually have to shoot one like this and then a real one. Very dramatic, no?
